The lifestyle has its own vocabulary, and the first time you read a profile on a swinger dating site, it can feel like decoding a secret language. What exactly is a "unicorn"? What is the difference between soft swap and full swap? This swinger glossary explains the most common terms clearly and tastefully, from A to Z, so you can read profiles with confidence and say exactly what you are looking for. If you are completely new, our beginner's guide to swinging is a good companion to this list.
A to D
Aftercare: the attention partners give each other after an experience, through talking, reassurance and closeness. Considered essential by experienced couples.
Bi-curious: someone who is curious about, but not necessarily experienced in, intimacy with people of the same gender.
Boundaries: the limits a person or couple sets on what they are comfortable with. Always respected, never negotiated on the night.
Club: a venue dedicated to the lifestyle, usually with a bar, a dance floor and separate play areas.
Compersion: the pleasure of seeing your partner happy with someone else. Sometimes described as the opposite of jealousy.
Consent: a clear, freely given and revocable agreement from every person involved. The foundation of the entire lifestyle.
Couple (MF, MM, FF): profiles often specify the composition of a couple, for example a man and a woman, two men or two women.
Cuckold: a man who enjoys the idea of his partner being with someone else, often while he watches. The term can be sensitive, so use it only if a couple describes themselves this way.

ENM (ethical non-monogamy): an umbrella term for relationships in which everyone involved knows about and agrees to intimacy with other people. Swinging is one form of ENM.
Exhibitionist: someone who enjoys being watched by others, always with the consent of those watching.
Free tonight: on Alcova, a signal members can switch on to show that they are available for a meeting the same evening.
Full swap: partners in a couple may share full intimacy with others, within the limits agreed by everyone.
Hall pass: permission from one partner for the other to have an experience alone, on agreed terms.
Hotwife: a woman in a committed relationship who enjoys meeting other people with her partner's enthusiastic consent. Her partner may or may not be present.
I to O
Lifestyle: the most common, discreet way swingers refer to their world. "Are you in the lifestyle?" means "Are you a swinger?"
Newbies: couples or singles who are new to the lifestyle. Being a newbie is perfectly fine, and honesty about it is appreciated.
Off-premises club: a venue where people meet and socialise but where intimate play takes place elsewhere, for example at home or in a hotel.
On-premises club: a venue that includes private or shared spaces for intimate play.
Open relationship: a relationship in which partners may see other people, sometimes independently. Not identical to swinging, which is usually done together.
P to S
Parallel play: two couples enjoying intimacy in the same space, each with their own partner, without swapping.
Party: a private lifestyle event, often by invitation, at a house, villa or hired venue.
Play: the lifestyle word for sensual or sexual activity with others.
Polyamory: having several loving, romantic relationships at the same time, with everyone's knowledge. Different from swinging, which focuses on recreational intimacy.
Same room: playing with others while your partner is present in the same room, whether or not they are involved.
Separate rooms: each partner plays out of sight of the other. Usually reserved for couples with a lot of trust and experience.
Single female (SF) and single male (SM): individuals without a partner who meet couples or other singles. Single women are often warmly welcomed; single men are expected to be especially respectful and patient.
Soft swap: sensual play with others, such as kissing and touching, without full intimacy, which is reserved for your own partner.
Stop word: a word or signal agreed in advance that immediately ends or pauses any situation.
Swinging: the practice of committed couples sharing intimate experiences with others, together and by mutual consent.
T to Z
Threesome: an encounter involving three people, often a couple and a single.
Unicorn: an affectionate nickname for a single woman interested in meeting couples. So called because she is considered rare.
Vanilla: someone outside the lifestyle, or conventional intimacy in general. Used without any judgement.
Verified: on many platforms, a badge showing that a member has confirmed their identity, for example with a selfie that matches their photos.
Veto: the right of either partner to decline a person or situation, without needing to explain.
Voyeur: someone who enjoys watching others, always where watching is welcome and consented to.
Wristband or bracelet signals: some events use coloured bracelets or accessories to signal availability or preferences. Their meaning varies from venue to venue, so always check.
How to use these terms wisely
Labels are useful shortcuts, but they never replace a real conversation. Two couples who both describe themselves as "soft swap" may still have quite different limits. A few tips:
- Use the terms in your profile to be clear about what you are looking for.
- Ask what a term means to the other person, rather than assuming.
- Avoid labelling others with words they have not chosen for themselves.
- Remember that your boundaries can change, and your profile can change with them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between soft swap and full swap?
Soft swap includes sensual play such as kissing and touching with others, but keeps full intimacy within the couple. Full swap allows full intimacy with others, within agreed limits.
Why is a single woman called a unicorn?
Because single women interested in meeting couples are relatively rare in the lifestyle compared with couples and single men, they are compared to the mythical creature.
Is swinging the same as an open relationship?
Not quite. Swinging is usually experienced together, as a couple, while an open relationship often allows partners to see others independently.
