Swinger sauna: what to expect the first time

Visiting a swinger sauna in Lisbon, Porto or elsewhere in Portugal? How it works, what to bring, etiquette and consent for a relaxed first visit.

17 October 2026 · 3 min read

For many curious couples and singles, a swinger sauna is a gentler first step than a night club. The mood is relaxed, the music low, conversations happen naturally and nobody has to "do" anything. Still, a first visit raises fair questions. This guide explains how a swinger sauna works, what to bring and the etiquette everyone follows.

What is a swinger sauna?

It is a wellness space for an adult, open-minded crowd. You find what a regular sauna offers, steam room, jacuzzi, showers and lounge areas, plus social spaces and sometimes more private rooms for those who want them.

The big difference from a club is the pace. Many saunas open in the afternoon, the atmosphere is calm, and most visitors simply enjoy relaxing, chatting and watching. In Portugal, and especially around Lisbon, the format draws more and more curious couples.

Before you go: agree on expectations

If you go as a couple, talk first. Three points are enough:

  • What you want: just to discover the place, to chat, or more.
  • Your limits: what is off the table this first time.
  • A discreet signal meaning "let's leave" or "we need to talk", no explanation needed.

A good first visit is one you both leave wanting to come back. If one of you hesitates, keep it to discovery. Our article on swinger etiquette and consent is worth reading beforehand.

What to bring

  • Flip-flops (often provided, but your own are more comfortable).
  • A robe or an extra towel, if you like to feel more covered.
  • Condoms, even if the venue offers them.
  • ID: entry is for adults only.
  • Leave the phone in the locker: nobody wants to see a camera in a place like this.

How a visit goes

At the door, staff explain how things work and the prices (often different for couples, single women and single men), then hand over towels and a locker key. After that, everyone moves at their own pace: shower, steam room, jacuzzi, bar.

Spending the first hour just relaxing is completely normal. Conversations start in the jacuzzi or at the bar. Regulars recognise newcomers and respect them.

The golden rules

  1. 1.No means no. A word, a gesture or a hand moved away is enough.
  2. 2.Ask before touching. Always.
  3. 3.Total discretion. What and who you see stays inside. Don't greet anyone outside unless they clearly signal it first.
  4. 4.Hygiene and courtesy. Shower before the pools, towel on benches, quiet voices in rest areas.
  5. 5.Each couple decides for itself. Don't join a couple's conversation uninvited.

Going solo?

Many saunas welcome single men and women, sometimes on set days only. Same rules, with extra discretion and patience: couples choose, and a respectful attitude always makes the best impression.

Frequently asked questions

How is a swinger sauna different from a swinger club?

The sauna is calmer, often open in the daytime, and focused on wellness and conversation. The club is a night out, livelier. See our guide to your first time at a swinger club.

Do I have to take part?

No. Many people come only to relax and take in the atmosphere.

Can I stay dressed?

In the water areas you wear a towel. At the bar and in shared spaces, a towel or robe is the norm.

How can I meet people before going?

Getting to know people beforehand gives a lot of confidence. That is exactly what Alcova is for.
